Splashes of Wisdom for College Girls

Am I Beautiful?

Dearest Daughter,

It’s foolish for the world to claim a certain look or style is most desirable. Trends and fads are merely the changing opinions of Hollywood producers and marketing execs scrambling for dollars and influence. A quick google search reveals the favored size, shape, and look of a female changes every decade.

Only God, your Creator, has the right to determine true beauty because God sees not only the outside of you but your inner thoughts and feelings too. God says,

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”  1 Peter 3:3-4

True beauty is found only within a godly, loving, and gentle heart. If you are kind, honest, dependable, respectful, you are beautiful. Real beauty is not in your appearance. Do not let your appearance determine what you think about yourself. Remember, physical beauty eventually fades away because we live in a fallen world in which our physical bodies wear down and die.

However, a beautiful heart, how you show God’s love and share God’s truth, can last beyond a lifetime in the lives of others. The reflection of God’s character through you is what really makes you beautiful and desirable.

Therefore, go take your next step into the world and be beautiful!

Where am I going?

Dearest Daughter,

Some parts of your life’s road  are pleasant and smooth while other sections are going to be discouraging and difficult.  Keep in mind that no one part of your path has to define the rest.

The journey is your story. Each blessing and trial, wise decision, and foolish choice determines your current direction but does not dictate your destination.

While life can be sobering knowing the most fulfilling and joyful accomplishments must be achieved by multiple wise decisions, take a breath.  Though foolishness may result in brutal consequences, God’s grace does enable recovery.

Regardless of your present location on your story road, my dear girl, God declares that you are a young lady of great worth who is treasured by the God of creation and sacrificed for by the King of Kings.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)

Does He Really Love Me?

Dearest Daughter

The best way to know if a guy genuinely loves you is by comparing him to the source and author of love itself.

Does your guy put your wants over his own?

Does your guy make your life better in every way, not just emotionally or socially? Does he spur you to strengthen yourself physically or offer you things that could harm you? Does he encourage you to excel academically and propel you toward reaching your life goals or pull you away from your intended path?

Is your guy’s attitude and attention to you  consistently caring and respectful regardless of where the two of you are, what you are doing, how you look, and the kind of day you are having, or is his behavior dependent upon his current emotional state?

How do your answers to the questions above compare to God’s love for you. God is love, and His love for you is relentless and unconditional for He loved you before you even knew of Him. God loves you even if you do not reciprocate, and He sacrificed himself for you to have a more abundant and hope-filled life with great purpose.

“By this the love of God is revealed in us: that God has sent his one and only Son into the world so that we may live through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.“ (1 John 4:9,10, ESV)

What is Love?

Dearest Daughter,

Movies, songs, and peers are all constantly trying to define love. Yet, these depictions of love are  only opinions and the attempts of humanity to place the intangible power and purity of love into a tangible frame of expectation. To really know the depths and inner workings of anything, we must go to the original source.

Knowing people, culture, and time would skew and warp the truth and clarity of love, God intentionally defined love for us and had his servant, Paul, include it in a letter to Paul’s friends living in Corinth, a city filled with false, corrupt, and destructive ideas of love.

Read 1 Corinthians 13:1-7

Love does exist. Love is real. Love is God.

Seek Him and you will discover and experience true love, and be able to recognize authentic love in yourself and in others.
